Typical Steps in Strategic Planning Process

1.  Identify Planning Process Outcome

  • Identify and align the team expectations of the final outcome.  How does success look like?

  • Identify the strategic questions that need to be addressed in this process

2.  Plan for Data Collection

  • Identify internal and external stake holders who will impact the process

  • Identify the data that needs to be collected

  • Design a method for collecting the input of the stakeholders.

  • Identify the organization documents that need to be collected

3.  Design the Strategic Planning Process

  • How extensive is this process going to be (light, moderate or extensive)?

  • Will we be holding retreats and large group gathering and how? (Refer to step 7)

  • Who are the decision makers?

  • Define the role and responsibilities of both the client and the consulting team

  • Design a communication plan to keep key stakeholders informed

  • Who will be the primary writer of the finished product?

4.  Engage Stakeholders

This step is not about achieving consensus, but rather, it is about collecting and synthesizing the perspectives of key stakeholders. 

  • How will we structure the participation of the stakeholders?

  • Are we going to engage external stakeholders and how?

  • This step is often conducted through series of interviews with the key stakeholders and selected staff members.

5.  Conduct an external and internal environmental scan

  • What are the primary forces that will impact the organization?

  • What are the trends in the field of service?

  • Who are the competition and what distinguish your organization from them?

6.  Conduct an organization capacity analysis.

  • Organizational structure and culture

  • Human and financial Resources

  • Processes and procedures

7.  Attain alignment among key stakeholders around mission, vision and values and current reality. 

  • Hold a retreat to facilitate discussion around these three components of the strategic plan

  • Conduct SWOT analysis as part of defining the current state

  • Conduct Force Field Analysis to determine the driving and restraining forces

8.  Develop 3 years goals for the organization

  • Hold goal setting workshops to identify the goals and develop an action plan

  • Ensure that these goals are aligned with the mission, vision, and values

 

9.  Write the final plan and obtain final approval

  • This step is just organizing all the information that were collected and created into a standard strategic plan format.

10.  Disseminate information to staff

  • This step is about communicating the plan to the staff to ensure organizational alignment
